Cookie Detective: The Butter Painting Affair is a special event in Cookie Run: Ovenbreak. It is the third Cookie Detective event focusing on Walnut Cookie and Almond Cookie's investigation of a missing masterpiece painting from the Hors d'Oeuvre Museum. Chapter 1 was released on May 28, 2021, coinciding with the release of Butter Pretzel Cookie, while Chapter 2 released on June 18, 2021, coinciding with the release of Almond Cookie. It is the first Cookie Detective event to be stored in the story player
Throughout the event, players collect Case Notes in order to interrogate Cookies and collect their testimonies. Case Notes can be found in Breakout, Cookie Trials, and Trophy Race, appearing more often in Trophy Race or while running with Butter Pretzel Cookie in Chapter 1 or Almond Cookie in Chapter 2. Case Notes can also be earned by completing Missions. Once at least 400 non-Mission Case Notes have been collected in one Round, Case Notes will appear less frequently until the start of the next Round.
Players can only interrogate Suspects with one line of questioning per Round, costing 10 Case Notes per interrogation in Chapter 1, and 15 Case Notes in Chapter 2. By collecting testimonies, players gain information that help them deduce the identities of the Suspects. Before the end of the Round, players must choose which of the Suspects they want to detain. They may change their decision any number of times before the Round's end, but must wait 10 minutes before they can do so. Players cannot vote for any Cookies that have been previously detained.
At the end of the Round, the Cookie with the most votes by players is detained, and players then see whether the detained Suspect is either Innocent or Guilty. If a Guilty Suspect is successfully detained, the story will continue, and all players will be rewarded 300 Crystals; however, if a suspect is wrongfully accused, "Someone's Thoughts" will hint towards the Guilty Suspect's identity. In Chapter 1, there are 16 Cookies to investigate, with 6 of them being the Culprits; Chapter 2 investigates 7 Cookies, with 3 of them being the Culprits.
Chapter 1 consists of 8 Rounds, while Chapter 2 consists of 5 Rounds, with each Round lasting for 2 days. At the end of each Chapter, each player is rewarded 200 Rainbow Cubes for each Guilty Suspect they voted for.
Birthday Cake Cookie asked me to wait outside. She didn't say I couldn't play outside, so I was popping some firecrackers behind the museum! But nowhere near the garden at all!
I came here with Strawberry Cookie, but later I was all by myself. I talked to Gumball Cookie for a brief moment. I then found Strawberry Cookie and went home.
Scouted the museum warehouse and grounds for valuables the night before the unveiling party. Shared information about the warehouse and where the painting could be placed.
Dialogue
Chili Pepper Cookie: WAAAIT! What are you moving? It smells so fragrant and... buttery! The scent just screams VALUABLE!
Chili Pepper Cookie: Is that from the museum? Try'na take it for your own, is that it?! Gimme! GIMME!
The night before the party, discovered the painting being moved elsewhere. Kept watch in order to keep witnesses away from the scene.
Dialogue
Carol Cookie: Oh look! Suspicious Cookie 2 and Suspicious Cookie 1 are heading off somewhere?
Carol Cookie: What are they carrying? Is that a painting?
Carol Cookie: Yes, let's lend them a hand! How may we help you?
Suspicious Cookie 1: Carol Cookie! Could you please keep a lookout for any wandering Cookies? I don't want anyone to see the party before it's finished!
Made preparations for the unveiling party on the previous night. Received a phone call while making her finishing touches. Decided to move the painting after receiving the phone call.
Dialogue
Birthday Cake Cookie: ...Suspicious Cookie 2, can you help me move this painting?
Suspicious Cookie 2: Huh? Didn't you said we're almost done with the party prep?
Birthday Cake Cookie: Just one final detail to perfect. But I can't move this thing on my own...
Played alone with firecrackers outside of the museum until Angel Cookie joined to watch. Angel Cookie's testimony provides alibi. Firecracker Cookie was nowhere near the warehouse.

Someone's Thoughts: An old saying goes, the answer might be right under your nose.
On one of Dr. Wasabi Cookie's errands. Used a shortcut and passed by the warehouse, discovering the painting in question. Assisted in "reshaping" the painting with can of spray paint.

Mustard Cookie: Hey, Suspicious Cookie 3? What should we do with this painting?
Suspicious Cookie 3: It's just... EURGH! I feel so frustrated just looking at it. I want to tear it apart...
Mustard Cookie: Welp, that's definitely a way to deal with it. Need a hand?
