CookieWars (Also known as "Cookie run Defense" or "Jelly War") was a game from the CookieRun franchise by Devsisters. Although retaining almost the same characters as other other games in the franchise, CookieWars was a player-vs-player tower defense game and the first non-platform running game in CookieRun universe.
Due to its heavily different genre than the main games of the series, CookieWars relied on different mechanics that involved strategy, something that was less present in the other games. Players could either play in a set of stages to complete a story, against another player, or in several mini-games to earn rewards.
It was globally released on August 23rd of 2018, though it has unfortunately ended its service less than two years after it, as it shut down on May 15th of 2020.
History[]
Before the Release[]
CookieWars was initially teased alongside several other games under the Cookie Run IP, and was the first of them to come out, with the closed beta test of the game being presented to Korean audiences in April of 2018. Shortly after, in July, the game was given a soft launch for a testing period in three countries: Canada, Hong Kong, and Thailand[3] , and then properly released the following month, though strangely excluding China and Japan from it.
The Release[]
On August 23rd, 2018, CookieWars launched worldwide for iOS on the Appstore and Android for Google play devices.
The game was quite popular for a time and even earned the Google Play Best of 2018 Excellence Award in Korea.[4] However, there was frequent unease in the player base over continual nerfs to the ways that premium currencies and higher-rarity units could be obtained, especially as these nerfs were not always noted down by Devsisters or OrumLabs.
On October 28, 2018 during the Halloween update, Survival Mode was added with a new Cookie called Energy Drink Cookie, it is a tank unit with a large amount of HP, and when defeated, explodes and poisons all nearby enemies. and soon on November, Tiger Lily Cookie was added as a L Grade unit. On Christmas, the last 5 units were added.
Before Closure[]
After January 17, 2019 during the Raid Mode update, the game stopped receiving updates without a statement made as to why, and was held in a limbo state. Even though the game was still playable, no developments were made towards the game, and events simply repeated endlessly.
Version 1.4.3 (or 1.3.6 on Android) was the last update for CookieWars, and as such the lobby had snow as part of the celebration for New Years Eve, this snow has since remained throughout the game's lifespan until its shutdown.
OrumLabs was also revealed to have been terminated due to its poor performance, potentially even because of bankruptcy.[5]
On April 16th, 2020, Devsisters announced that CookieWars' service would come to an end on May 15th, 2020 due to certain difficulties maintaining the service.[6]
Closure[]
As announced previously, CookieWars has entered its shutdown period on the 15th of May, 2020. In the following 24 hours of the closure date, the game would send out various free mythic copies and other materials to all players. The game was then finally shutdown at 8PM GMT, with the official CookieWars X (formerly Twitter) account sending out a tweet[7], apologizing for their inability to maintain the game any longer, and telling the players that the Cookies will always be on other adventures in the other CookieRun games.

Hearts[]
Similar to the life system in LINE Cookie Run and Cookie Run Kakao, Hearts are one of the main factors in Cookie Wars. Every time a level was played, the player would lose hearts. The total capped heart amount would increase by level. Once the player loses less than the cap amount, they would slowly get them back over time, however, the hearts can also overflow over the cap amount. Hearts can be obtained in the shop, or by quests, playtime rewards, daily rewards or levels.
Currency[]
There was three types of currency in CookieWars, Gold, Crystals, and Medals. Coins are used to buy regular low rarity pulls and in many forms of upgrades, while Crystals are used to buy higher level premium pulls. Medals are used to buy Units, Pets, and other objects from the PVP exchange center, and can be earned by winning PVP matches. Coins and Crystals can be earned by playing levels, completing quests, playtime rewards or daily rewards, and, of course, by purchasing them with real-life currency.

Trivia[]
- Despite appearing in various promotional materials for the game, Dark Choco Cookie, Zombie Cookie, Red Pepper Cookie, Pink Choco Cookie, Prophet Cookie, Skater Cookie, Werewolf Cookie, Alchemist Cookie, Red Bean Cookie, and a Jelly Walker variant of Tiger Lily Cookie all make no appearances in the actual game itself. However, some of them have unused assets found in the game's files.
- In the first trailer, a new Cookie with a grey suit and pointed shades is notably seen, but does not make an appearance in the final game nor anywhere else in the franchise. It is unknown why this Cookie was scrapped, but it seems to be a rarer version of Hero Cookie as it has his mint candy on its head.
- Despite the game's shutdown and Devsisters refusal to mention it any further, there are several references to it in the other Cookie Run games, this includes:
- Cookie Run: OvenBreak: Jelly Walker, Wasabi Overdrive, Energy Drink Cookie appearing in GingerBrave's Trial (April Fools 2021). The Jelly Walkers also appears as cameo in Jellywood Movie Set breakout on stage 4
- Cookie Run: Kingdom: In one of the stories in the game, Custard Cookie III is worried for Wizard Cookie and fears he might become a "jelly-eyed mindless monster"..
