- Red Equinox draws heavily from the Japanese culture that surrounds the red spider lily, which is also known as the "Flower from the Other Shore" (彼岸花). In Japanese folklore, these flowers are said to grow on the shore of a region similar to the afterlife known as "Higan" (彼岸). During the autumn equinox, people who have passed away and gone to Higan temporarily return to the world of the living in the form of red spider lilies. This theme is evident throughout the story and quotes in Red Equinox, which mention that people who seek the grove never return, among other lines.
- Additionally, red spider lilies are often called the "equinox flower", which might be the source of the English name for the Costume.
